St. Helena Worshiping the Cross

Detail from the main altarpiece, Chapel of St. Joseph
New Cathedral, Salamanca

As usual, the saint wears a crown as mother of Constantine the Great. Her left hand supports a cross while her right holds the nails that St. Quiriacus is said to have dug up for her. The cross is not the usual full-scale representation of the True Cross, perhaps because of the limits imposed by the size and shape of the portrait.
